Why it's important to select the correct vehicle and tyre size
Vehicle
There are a surprising number of vehicles that cannot use traditional snowchains, the types that put chain on the inside of the wheel as well as on the tread. This is usually because there is not enough space between the wheels and the shock absorbers; this can be a problem for ordinary SUVs and 4x4s as well as for high performance cars.
You will find this important information in your car handbook - please check this before using your snowchains! Our database is intended to do the basic work for you but, with so many new vehicles and tyre sizes, it should only ever be treated as a guide.
Tyre size
Please also check your tyre size - if you buy incorrectly-sized chains they will be either too tight or too loose.
Ladder track chains
The good news is that car handbooks usually only refer to "traditional snowchains". Ladder track chains such as the Polaire GRIP and Spikes-Spider range only put chain over the tyre tread, so are not subject to these restrictions. They are also ideal for use on rear wheel drives where there is minimal space between the top of the wheel and the wheel arch.
It's really important to select the correct vehicle, paying attention to the year of the manufacture

We look around the European market regularly and are confident that this is much the best value box of this size below £225 - it's a significant step up, quality wise, from supermarket boxes. The Roady 350 is a front hinged box - the best design for both safety and waterproofing in this mid market sector - with a single rear mounted lock. The rear opening also gives you good access from either side - it opens to 50cm wide at the back and 30cm at the side mid-point - making it easy and quick to fit and remove, load and unload. The reinforced flat base means that it will fit all standard roof bar configurations, including modern Fixpoint bars which are often too wide apart for short wide mid market roof boxes. At 78cm wide there should be space to carry at least one bike carrier, especially if you use aerobars to gain extra useable roof bar length. The box is supplied with the base inside the lid, to minimise freight costs / fuel use (Hapro supplies these boxes to dealers worldwide) but the self-assembly work is quick and easy - check out the Fitting video tab. Specifications: - A black top on a black base.
- Made from a very tough UV-protected ABS/ASA recyclable plastic
- Weight 11kg empty, maximum load 50kg, gross loading limit 61kg.
- 3 year guarantee
- The lock is good and sturdy; it's a 'pull down to lock' system, which is good except that if you were to take the key from the lock and place it in the box you could easily lock the key in the box. Our advice is to turn the key to open the box, then as soon as the lid is clear of the lock housing turn it again, at which point the key can't be removed until the box is properly closed again
- The lid opens wide on spring struts.
- The U bolts supplied are 56mm wide with M6 threads.
- Aerobar adapters are available if you are fitting this box to T-track aluminium bars - see links below.
- Here is the basic geometry of this roof box:
- Maximum distance between roof bar centres, front bar to rear bar = 94cm
- Minimum distance between roof bar centres = 55cm
- Distance between the holes, i.e. the free roof bar width required = 42cm
Hapro is the world's second biggest roof box manufacturer, one of the big three (Thule, Hapro, KAMEI). Hapro are based near Rotterdam in the Netherlands, and make roof boxes for numerous important worldwide brands as well as selling under their own Hapro brand.
Do you need roof bars as well? If so, check out our amazing box and bars package deal which provides everything you need, including this box, locking roof bars, and a roof box storage device, all for a fixed price! Click here for more details.

Vehicle type: Hatchback
Excellent buy!, frees up so much more space in the car, don't know why we didn't get one sooner!, very pleased, even leave it on the roof when not in use, not noticed any difference in fuel consumption.. Get one! ;)

This is the first time I have bought and used a top box. When I first got it out of the box I thought that it felt really cheap and flimsy but it has proved me wrong.
I work in Europe for the Summer so practically take my whole life with me, so far it has done 7 thousand miles through howling gales, sub zero conditions, and 40 degree heat.
For the price I paid I would recommend it to everyone.

Vehicle type: Hatchback
A little fiddly to assemble and put up the first time, but once you figure it out, it's OK. Holds plenty of stuff and feels pretty sturdy. Only niggles are that the catch doesn't reliably hold onto the key when it is opened (so you could potentially lock the key inside) and it can deform slightly when it has a lot of stuff in, making it hard to close.

Have used it a lot since buying it, no problems at all, would happily recommend it to anyone. Doesn't feel quite as solid as some other boxes, but then it's a lot cheaper than some other boxes.
About our reviews:
We test, and often use personally, almost all the products we sell, and we stand behind our comments and recommendations unless customers convince us they need changing. Our Customer Services and Workshop staff also have input into our recommendations.
But it's because we've learned a lot over many years that customer feedback is so important. Fresh, first time out opinions are the most useful ones, and in any event we certainly don't have access to the full range of vehicles that our customers have between them.
Product feedback from existing customers helps our new customers make choices, and also helps our suppliers with their product development.
We e-mail our customers a week or so after their order arrives and invite them to send in a review.
Some reviews are suitable for multiple products. Where appropriate we may, for example, use the same review for a number of different roof bar products where the only difference is the length of the roof bar.

Very few customers know much about the roof box market before they visit our site. We have a lot of information about the things to think about before buying, and the “real world usefulness" of various roof box features, but you’ll be buying sight unseen, and you probably won’t have used a roof box before, so there is inevitably some luck in getting a box that you’ll be happy with. We want to remove the risks of buying these large and often expensive items, perhaps from brands which almost every other roof box retailer doesn’t stock, and so we have a unique “90 day Exchange Scheme” for roof boxes. This allows you to use a roof box and, with the benefit of experience, to exchange it for a new one within 90 days of invoice date, only paying a contribution to our carriage costs. Most exchanges are from a shorter box to a longer one, or from a wider box to a narrower one. These are the rules of the Exchange Scheme: - You are allowed one exchange only.
- The original box must be in "as new" condition, subject only to fair wear and tear.
- The replacement box must be a different model. Not just an alternative colour.
- The replacement box must not be part of a package deal or be from our Bargains section.
- Roof bars are never part of the Exchange Scheme.
This is how the Exchange Scheme works: - We charge in full for the replacement box, including carriage charges, and a charge for any packaging needed for the return of the original.
- If you want us to collect the original box, there will be a £50 carriage charge (please note that regional surcharges may apply).
- We arrange the collection, if requested.
- When the original box arrives back here we refund you for the invoice value of the original box, but you won't get back more than the invoice value of the replacement box. In other words, if the replacement is cheaper than the original we won't be giving you "extra cash back".
Please note: we can only collect roof boxes from mainland UK.

Delivery FAQs
When will my order arrive?
There are no deliveries on Saturdays, Sundays or Bank Holidays, except for postable items where Royal Mail has a Saturday delivery. Express Delivery orders placed on a Friday (before 1pm) should be delivered on the Monday or Tuesday, Express Delivery orders placed on a Saturday or Sunday should be delivered on the Tuesday or Wednesday. The arrangements for Very Heavy Items are different and are shown above.
What about Next Working Day delivery?
Most Express delivery orders will arrive on the next working day, if the order is placed before the cut-off time (see above). Some will arrive on the second working day if there has been a "split-delivery". So-called “split deliveries” happen when the couriers do not have enough trailer space for everything that should be moved around the UK, so they will load what they can and leave the rest for the next trailer.
Is my delivery day guaranteed?
No retailer or courier company can ever "guarantee" a Next Working Day delivery. As well as split deliveries, all courier companies occasionally have the same transport problems as can happen to everyone else, including snow blocked roads, closed roads, traffic jams, mechanical breakdown, an inability to find the delivery address, or to gain access to it if, for example, it's in a block of flats. We work with some of the best couriers in the business, and overall they provide an outstanding service.
Do I need to be at home?
We are very flexible with our deliveries and will aim to deliver to an address which suits you – this does not need to be your home address. Goods can usually be left without signature - we prefer this with roof boxes. There's a "Special Delivery Instructions" box in the checkout area where we'll ask you to choose a typical instruction and then amend it to suit your particular requirements.

We take the following cards, and also PayPal. Please note that the entry on your card statement will be from "The Roof Box Company".
